Boko Haram Threats: Akwa Ibom State Govt Issues Red Alert, Bans Motorcycles…

SECURITY THREAT IN THE STATE

The State Government says her attention has been drawn to text messages from a terrorist group, Boko Haram, threatening the peace and security of the State.

A statement by the state Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr. Aniekan Umanah, says these threat text messages are usually targeted at churches, markets, schools and other public places.

Mr. Umanah advised members of the public to be security conscious and be extra vigilant by promptly reporting suspicious movements of strange elements and other actions that constitute security threats to security personnel for immediate action.

The Information boss assures all indigenes and residents of Akwa Ibom State of their safety as government has directed security agencies to step up surveillance towards not only tackling the threat, but to also ensuring that the safety and security of lives and properties, including sensitive and important installations in the State.

Mr. Umanah, therefore, urges all law abiding citizens to go about their legitimate businesses as government is on top of the situation, maintaining that government is poised to sustaining the peace and stable environment which makes Akwa Ibom a safe place for visitors, investors and her indigenes.

The state government has frowned at the subtle resurgence of motorcycle operations within the Uyo metropolis despite a subsisting ban on all forms of motorcycle operations within the area.

The State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr. Aniekan Umanah, who expressed the concern of government in a statement, reminded the motorcycles operators of the ban on motorcycle operations which came into force on July 2011 and observed with dismay that for some time now, these motorcycles have been operating along Idoro Road up to the Flyover; Mbiabong Ifa Atai axes of Oron Road; Nwaniba Road/ Udo Ekpo Mkpo Street Junction, Udo Udoma Avenue and Nung Oku segment of Ring Road III/Aka – Nung Udoe Road Junction.

Mr. Umanah said the operations of motorcycles within the areas covered by the embargo is in total violation of the law, adding that such actions will attract sanctions, and warned such violators to stop forthwith as security agents have been directed arrest and prosecute them.

The Information Commissioner, while reiterating government’s commitment to ensuring adequate and hitch free transportation within the Uyo Capital City and other parts of the State, also called on the public to stop actions that are in contravention of the position of government regarding the operation’s of Motorcycles within the State.
