Akwa Ibom State traders across major markets in the state
on Friday temporarily suspended operations and converge in
the State capital to unanimously declare support for the
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in the
state, Mr Udom Emmanuel.
The event which took place at the popular Itam Market was
organized by the Conference of Traders Association in the
State to show their support for the PDP government in the
state led by Chief Godswill Akpabio.
Speaking at the ceremony, the PDP Standard bearer in Akwa
Ibom State Mr. Udom Emmanuel promised to assist traders in
the State to encourage trade and investments through the
establishment of a microfinance bank and opening of several
economic opportunities for them.
Emmanuel, who said he was surprised that the traders had
shut down all markets in the state to honour him, pointed out
that with the establishment of a microfinance bank for the
traders, the members of the association would be able to
access loans to enable them expands the scope of their
He further assured that his administration would establish an
International Market in the State to check Capital flight to
neighbouring States who have bigger markets.
Emmanuel added that his administration among other
things, will expand the capacity of the Itam Market by building
new lock-up stores and work in the poor drainage system
bedeviling the market.
He noted that with the cargo terminal at the Airport put into
functional use, a warehouse at the airport and the maritime
and waterways being opened through the Ibaka Deep Sea
Project, better times await traders in the State as they will add
value to their businesses.
Speaking on the occasion, the Director General of Udom/
Moses Campaign Council, Otuekong Idongesit Nkanga, said a
vote for Emmanuel and the PDP was a vote for a secured
future and a better Akwa Ibom State.
He warned the traders, not to be deceived by those carrying
broom and shouting Change, as the State and Nigeria have
already witnessed changes in the uncommon transformation
observed both at the Federal and State levels.
Earlier, the State Secretary of the Association, Elder Ofonime
Frank promised that the association would give a one hundred
percent vote to Udom Gabriel Emmanuel and all PDP
Candidates at the polls.
