In a bid to ensure maximum participation of Students in next year’s General Election in Akwa Ibom State, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Students Matters, Comrade Otobong Akpan, has taken her voter sensitisation drive to more tertiary institutions in the State.
The Programme, carried out through Students Social Volunteer Scheme (SSVS), over the week, visited the Akwa Ibom State College of Science and Technology, Nnug Ukim, Ikono Local Government Area, National Open University, Uyo Study Center, Obong Christian University, and Sure Foundation Polytechnic, in Etim Ekpo and Ukanafun Local Government Areas, respectively.
Speaking at the Akwa Ibom State College of Science and Technology, the Governor’s Aide said the event was specifically aimed at enlightening the students on the need to be in the forefront of national and global change, by taking advantage of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR), so they could exercise their franchise on Election day.
Comrade Akpan who lauded the Students’ continued support to Governor Udom Emmanuel, implored them to be proactive in their quest for good governance, pointing out that, “too much side talks, grumbling and noise making will not solve any problem.
“Voter Registration Exercise is not ‘their thing’, it is ‘our thing’. As young people, we should be at the forefront of global change. That is why I’m going round all tertiary institutions for CVR Campaign. I want you to stop procrastinating, go all out for your PVC”, she added.
She assured the School Management and Students of the Governor’s interest in their welfare and espressed optimism that their pleas for modern structures in the Institution will soon be addressed, by the State Government.
At National Open University, Uyo Study Center, Akpan used the opportunity to thank the State Chief Executive for his lofty achievements in the educational sector and congratulated the Students on their new Study Center, which she noted was made possible by Governor Emmanuel.
She told the students to ensure more development accrue to the Institution by registering and obtaining their PVCs, so they could return the Governor for a second term.
“We’re also here to thank the Governor for what he has done for the National Open University. There was no Study Center in Uyo, but today, the case is different. The Governor has done so much in the education sector and we have reasons to return him to Hilltop Mansion in 2019”, she noted.
At Obong Christian University Etim Ekpo and Sure Foundation Polytechnic, Ukanafun, Comrade Akpan condemned recent crisis in the Areas, but however assured the Students of the the State Government’s unrelented efforts in ensuring that elements of insecurity are completely wiped out, so they could learn in a more conducive atmosphere.
She urged the students to be involved in all aspects of societal development, by taking active part, in next year’s polls.
She warned them against indulging in cultism and other social vices, which she noted, have contributed to the decayed educational system in the nation and further reminded them of the State Government’s zero tolerance for cultism.
“Social vices is eating up our school system. We are against secret cults, it is detrimental to our school system. So much is expected of you, don’t not disgrace your families. The current administration under Governor Udom Emmanuel is against cultism
“Governor Udom Emmanuel is doing well and we’ll come back to consult you to vote for him, in 2019. Take your studies seriously, add more value to your academics. Continue pushing ahead, for the sky is your starting point”, Akpan maintained.
Present at the various institutions were the Special Assistant to the Governor Trade and Market Matters, Akparawa Idorenyin Raphael, that of Agriculture, Mr Moses Armstrong, past and present student leaders in the State and Management Staff.
Highlight of the tour was the presentation of financial support to indigent students at each institution.
