…Be Honest with the People
By Osondu Ahirika
The Commissioner for Works in Akwa Ibom State, Mr Ephraim inyangeyen has frowned at the litany of abandoned Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC road projects scattered across the state, with a charge on the agency to be honest in her dealing with the people and communities in the state where they have executed projects.
Commissioner Inyangeyen made the call when he led a team of ministry staff and news men to inspect some road projects executed by His Excellency Governor Udom Gabriel Emmanuel. Mr Ephraim inyangeyen who expressed confidence that some of the roads will be ready for commissioning by May 29, as part of activities to mark the 2nd anniversary of Governor Emmanuel however slammed the shoddy job done by The NDDC on the 600 meters stretch of Nung Ukim Ikono road which has been abandoned five years after it was awarded in 2012.
Commissioner inyangeyen explained that, the remaining 4.6 kilometers of the Road has been undertaken by the state government but is now forced to end in the middle of nowhere as the other end handled by NDDC has been abandoned.
The Works commissioner argued that, the state government cannot embark on completing the abandoned part as that will be fraudulent with NDDC claiming they did the job. He therefore advised the community leaders who were restive to formally write to the NDDC to come and complete the road or write to the state governor to take over the project and bail the community out. He however decried the fact that the NDDC has already published the 600meter stretch as a completed project.
While observing that, the same problem is duplicated in many parts of the state, Mr inyangeyen advised the leadership of the NDDC to imbibe integrity and honesty in discharging her operational mandate to the peoples of the Niger Delta in general and Akwa Ibom State in particular.
Among the roads inspected, the Ikot Usop -Ikot Edeghe -Ikot Ekpuk road with a 30 meters Span bridge in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area is already at about 90% completion level. It will be commissioned by Governor Emmanuel before May29 among others to mark his 2ND Anniversary in office.
Other roads visited were the 6.1kilometre Nto Edino -Ekwerre Azu road with 2No. 45 meters span bridges in Only Amara Local Government Area and the 4.6kilometer School of Arts and Science road, Nung Ukim, in Ikono Local Government Area both of which are nearing completion and the contractors handling the projects have pledged to deliver the roads on schedule for commissioning
