The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr Udom Emmanuel has urged youths of Onna Local Government Area to embrace sports as a vehicle of development and wealth creation.
Gov Emmanuel who made the remark at the final ceremonies of the 2016 Onna Unity Competition held at the Onna Sports Stadium Sunday praised the youths of the local government area for actively participating in the tournament which is also christened the “DAKKADA UNITY CUP”.
The Governor who was represented by the Commissioner For Works, Akparawa Ephraim Inyang praised the management of VKS Nigeria Construction Limited for sponsoring the tournament and being responsive to their corporate social responsibility.
“Sports is a big earner now. Parents should encourage their wards to embrace sports with education. Our government is committed to developing sports, that is why we are intensifying efforts to complete the sports centre here in Onna. I charge Onna to take this same spirit to the Governor’s cup next year and go for the big prize”. The Governor added
Awa Ward 3 defeated Oniong East 2 to clinch the golden trophy in the final encounter. Awa ward 4 smiled home with the bronze trophy and medals.
The first place team went home with the prize money of Two Hundred Thousand Naira (N200,000), the second placed team received One Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira (N150,000).
Governor Udom Emmanuel appreciated the first placed team with an additional Five Hundred Thousand Naira (N500,000), the second placed team with Three Hundred Thousand Naira (N300,000) and the third placed team with Two Hundred Thousand Naira (N200,000).
Earlier the Managing Director of VKS Nig Limited, Engr Onur Kumral thanked the Transition Chairman of the local Government, Dr Joshua Ndoho for putting the competition together and expressed his company’s delight in supporting sports development in the area.
He pledge the company’s readiness to continue to partner with the people to bring greater development and deliver quality turnkey projects to Onna and the state in general.
Several dignitaries graced the occasion including the Deputy Chief Whip, Otuekong Nse Essien, Elder Ben Udobia, Obong Johnny Udonsek, Aides to the Governor, Transition Chairmen of local govt areas and other special guests.
