The Green Brigade is a modern legacy, the Akpabio administration will be remembered for. This is the remark of the Honourable Commissioner for Environment and Mineral Resources, Prince Enobong Uwah, while on inspection tour of the Uyo Capital city to monitor the special clean-up intervention embarked upon by his Ministry as the State swings into the celebratory mood for her 27th Anniversary due on the 23rd of September 2014.
Commissioner Uwah who remarked that, the over 2000 strong Green Brigade is the initiative of Her Excellency, Mrs Ekaette Unoma Akpabio, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources and has become the ensign of this administration which has revolutionized the business of waste management and efficient sanitation of the environment, scored the outfit high on performance, maintaining that, the special Clean-up exercise is merely a reinforcement of what the Green Brigade does on a daily and regular basis. Prince Uwah dismissed as false, a Media report that, workers of the Green Brigade were being shortchanged and paid a paltry 10, 000 Naira for their labour. He disclosed that, it is public knowledge that all staffers of the Green Brigade earn 20, 000 monthly for their services and that all of them without exception are required to own a bank account, into which the monies are paid directly and therefore it is impossible for anybody to short-pay them. Prince Uwah also disclosed that, prior to the coming of the Green Brigade, people engaged in street sweeping and other related activities were receiving 7000 Naira monthly, but that they were absorbed by the Green Brigade and upgraded to earn the 20, 000 as the First Lady of Akwa Ibom was bent on giving a life line to the unemployed through this measure. He charged reporters to be wary of agents of falsehood and blackmail whose aim is to spread mischief and smear reputations.
On the flood situation in some areas of Uyo, Commissioner Uwah lauded the proactive measures approved by Governor Godswill Akpabio to contain the menace, observing that it would have been worse. The Environment boss observed that, but for the Underground Pipe Jacking drainage, the intervention at Uruan Street/Obio Imoh/Oron Road intersection, massive desilting of gutters and drainages all over Uyo, and the gully reclamation at Eka Street, Dominic Utuk avenue, Ewet and Nwaniba underground drainage systems, Uyo would have suffered a deluge of disastrous proportions. He assured that the State Government is not resting on her oars as other trouble spots will be addressed soon.
commissioner Uwah argued that flood has sacked entire towns and cities in many countries, including the U.S.A, United Kingdom and currently Pakistan, and even these very advanced countries are still learning to cope with the rage of floods when it strikes and sued for understanding from the people, while Government works to resolve the grey areas. On the 27th anniversary of the State, Prince Uwah felicitated the Government and people of Akwa Ibom State on the milestone affirming that God has remained faithful to the land of promise.
He particularly lauded what he described as the Golden Age of Uncommon Transformation under watch of Governor Akpabio in the last seven years plus. He added that Chief Akpabio is a revelation in good governance and performance who has radically and significantly altered the physical, social and cultural dynamics of the State with unparalleled zeal, integrity and patriotism through the drive of his zeal to make Akwa ibom a destination of choice. While pledging uncompromising loyalty to Governor Akpabio, he again reiterated his call on the good people of Akwa Ibom to work hard to ensure the consolidation of sustainable development by supporting the succession plans of the governor and shunning the false propaganda and bias of a few detractors. He further opined that Governor Akpabio will receive a kind mention in the chronicles of Akwa Ibom and Nigeia for his stellar performance which makes the 27th anniiversary worth celebrating.
