EARCOM Harps Ibeno Women on PVC Ahead of 2019 Elections
The Chairman Ethical and Attitudinal Re-Orientation Commission (EARCOM), Dr Dorothy Thompson has called on the people of Ibeno Local Government Area to register and obtain their Permanent Voters Card (PVC) in order to increase the voting strength of Ibeno in the 2019 general elections
Thompson made the call recently on the occasion of Ibeno Women Conference on the Importance of Massive Voters Registration and Pertinent Vices which took place at the Ulok Ulok Hall, Ukpenekang, Ibeno.
She explained that the event was organized by the commission as part of its activities to create awareness and sensitize the people of the area in particular and the entire state in general to consider the ongoing voters’ registration carried out by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as viable political process in the state if they must be relevant in the 2019 elections with a view to ensuring that the People Democratic Party (PDP).
Thompson told the gathering comprising mostly of women that in the last conducted Local Government Elections in the state, the people Ibeno did not do well as compared to other local governments in the state and attributed the low turn up of people at the polls to the fact that most of them did not possess the PVC and stressed that now that the exercise was on going, they should properly sensitize aged 18 years and above to go out en mass and register so that they could exercise their franchise in next year’s elections.
The commission’s boss noted that the Udom Emmanuel administration was very particular about Ibeno people and would not want them to lag behind in the governance process and such had directed EARCOM to take the INEC voters, registration exercise to the nooks and crannies of the state, stressing that in the ongoing project, Ibeno should grab the opportunity with both hands to gain more from the dividend of democracy of the PDP led administration in the state.
She told Ibeno women that the interest free loan facility of the Governor Udom Emmanuel administration was ongoing and if it had not yet come to them, they should exercise patient as the next round of the scheme will be extended to them.
Thompson pointed out that the commission has the mandate of changing the negative attitudes of people and re orientate them towards societal growth. She alleged that due to the missionary activities of Samuel Bill in the Ibeno via the establishment of Qua Iboe Church 1887, the area had been religiously guided against acts capable of truncating social order, but of late, the area had turned to a breeding and operational ground to cultism due to cross cultural influences.
She told them as mothers, they have the duty of discouraging their children from cultism and rape as they were inimical to societal progress but as well embrace the free education policy of the present administration so that they could up being productive members of the society.
The chairman of the local government, Mr Ifum Henry Udoh represented by the leader of the legislature, Mrs Grace Ekpe said he was particularly impressed having EARCOM visit the area to create awareness on the need for them to obtain the PVC adding that the item was the only thing that will make politically relevant ahead of the 2019 elections.
He explained that his administration would support any political process that will make Ibeno be and remain at the main stream of Akwa Ibom politics and that was why the Ulok Ulok Hall was filled with women whom have not only turned up for the awareness exercise, but also committed to support the administration of Governor Udom Emmanuel.
Udoh requested the commission to impress on INEC to send additional voter’s registration machine to Ibeno to accelerate the exercise, saying that the machine currently being used was faulty.
The chairman, Ibeno Youth Council, Mr Samuel Akpan who represented also represented the Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth Matters, Mr Iwa Udofia, called on youths aged 18 years and above, women to avail themselves of the opportunity provided by INEC and obtain the PVC as it would serve as a prerequisite item of empowerment by government.
The wife of the chairman, Lady Ethel Ifum Udoh and the wife of the Paramount Ruler, Obonganwan Theresa Achianga pledged the commitment of the women towards the registration exercise and support to the Governor in the 2019 general elections.
Highpoint of the event was the distribution of EARCOM exercise books T- Shirts and caps to the women in the ten wards of the area.
