Few hours after the August Edition of the mandatory monthly General sanitation of Akwa Ibom State Government, reports have unfolded on how the Member representing Itu State Constituency, Hon. Idongesit Ituen fought the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Iniobong Essien, during the Sanitation exercise.
According to an eye witness (name withheld) who narrated the incident, the lawmaker had defaulted the 7am -10am restriction of movement, when he gathered some youths of Itu to play football, at West Itam Secondary School, while the sanitation was ongoing.
Intimated of the sabotage on the State government by the lawmaker, the Environment Commissioner and his team who were on routine tour, across the State, to monitor compliance, arrived at the scene where Idongesit Ituen was playing football.
The source said on arrival at the playground, Dr Essien confronted the lawmaker, who became furious and descended on the Commissioner.
Narrating further, the source added that Idongesit Ituen later directed angry youths who were already around, to harass the Commissioner and his team.
“The lawmaker defaulted the State Government’s law by playing football with some youths while the sanitation was ongoing”, the source said.
“The Commissioner for Environment was hinted and he and his team went to the football field, behold, he was linched personally by the lawmaker before he mobilized some touts to harass the commissioner and his team”, he added.
Another source who preferred anonymity said Dr Essien never knew that the lawmaker was at the field where the match was ongoing, but only went there to inquire if the players were oblivious of the sanitation exercises.
He said, the Commissioner was about questioning the players when Idongesit Ituen emerged, telling the youths to ignore the man (referring to Dr Essien), a scene, the source said, caught the Environment Commissioner by surprise, as he said, “I didn’t know you were here, you should not be the one doing this, you are in government and you should be the one cautioning the youths not to do this.”
The source who said, “Idongesit Ituen is a very useless guy, he wanted to beat the commissioner today, personally”, confirmed that Idongesit Ituen also displayed hatred for a son of the Area and current Commissioner for Housing and Special Duties, Mr Akan Okon, when he boasted, “do you know what it means to be an elected member? Do you know what it means to have bought form to the House of Assembly? If you don’t know me, go and ask Akan Okon, ask him what I have done to him.”
The source also figured a certain Samuel Ekpa as one of the angry youths who harassed the Commissioner.
“Even Samuel Ekpa wanted to go and beat the Commissioner, but I told him to stop, but he said no, that they have taken over Itu.”
Reports said it took efforts of security personnel attached to the Commissioner to calm the situation.
Meanwhile, reactions have continued to trail the incidence. While many blame the Itu Lawmaker for erring against the directives from the State government, others have described him as being responsible for the crisis in Itu Local Government Area.
