The Speaker, Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Barr. Onofiok Luke says the House will not succumb to any campaign of calumny launched against it by persons who do not mean well for the people of the state.
The Speaker made this know, Monday while addressing members of his constituency under the aegis of Amazing Grace Group when they paid him a courtesy visit in his office.
Reacting to some sponsored media campaign launched against the House of Assembly by some persons over the decision of the lawmakers to investigate the Anchor Poultry Borrowers programme recently suspended by the House, Barr. Luke said the legislature remains resolute in its avowed determination to ensuring that Akwa Ibom people are not short-changed by persons who do not mean well for the state. In his words, “We are not pre-empting what the investigative committee will come up with, But we want to use this opportunity to say; for Akwa Ibom people, we will ensure that Akwa Ibom people are not short-changed in what so ever will be coming for Akwa Ibom people.
“We will not allow anybody to come in here and defraud Akwa Ibom people of their hard earned money. The House of Assembly has promised to stand with the people to ensure that whatsoever funding that the state government is able to draw from the Central Bank is given to the due and adequate beneficiary of such programmes, whether it is palm oil plantation, whether it is cassava or poultry we will not be intimidated by certain persons who know that their hands are not clean who has gone to mobilize the media to begin to intimidate the House of Assembly to blackmail the House of Assembly with ‘I stand with due process or No slot’ slogan. The House of Assembly is not intimidated. We will do our work within the ambits of the law, and we promise that we will bring to book those who are found wanting in the course of this investigative hearing”.
“As a House we are not intimidated. We stand firm and that is why you have not heard any scandal here. We don’t out step our constitutional responsibilities and we don’t do things out of fear or favour. We do things that will make for the good of Akwa Ibom people and for the good image of the House”.
The Speaker expressed appreciation to members of the Amazing Group family for the various role they played during the electioneering period of 2015 which led to his success at the polls, and restated his commitment to the advancement of the wellbeing of Nsit-Ubium people. He enjoined them to continue to rally support for Governor Udom Emmanuel, and his people oriented programmes.
Earlier, the Director General of the organization, Mr. Gabriel Okon, said the members of the group were in the Assembly complex on a solidarity visit to the Speaker, and used the opportunity to thank Governor Udom Emmanuel and members of the House for the confidence reposed on their son.
Passing a confidence vote on Barr. Luke, the Amazing Grace family boss said the group is satisfied with the effective representation of Nsit-Ubium State Constituency by their lawmaker and Speaker of the House.
“We are satisfied in your representation. You have the charisma, finesse for this job, you are the people’s manager. We will continue to support this administration, because you have government to Nsit-Ubium people”.
Throwing his weight behind the investigative hearing conducted by the House of Assembly with a view of unraveling the truth behind the recent publication of some list of supposed beneficiaries for the Anchor Poultry Borowwers programme, a member of the organization, Mr. Emem Monday Jimmy lauded the legislature for taking the bull by the horn, saying it was a step in the right direction.
Members of the House who were in attendance during the courtesy call include, the House Leader, and member representing Oruk-Anam State Constituency, Rt. Hon. Udo Kierian Akpan, Chief Whip, and member for Ini State Constituency, Hon. Emmanuel Ekpenyong, member for Ikono, Rt. Hon. Victor Udofia, member for Esit-Eket/Ibeno, Hon.
