8 Ways for Men to Handle a Breakup Responsibly

Finding Peace
More often than not, guys tend to avoid confronting emotions head on, which can lead to some pretty poor coping decisions. Here are 8 ways to help find peace after experiencing heartbreak.

Grow Spiritually
Getting your spiritual life in order will be remarkably helpful for getting through this transitional period in your life. There’s no one way to do this, but find something that works best for you. Start regularly reading scripture, meditate over something that inspires you, or just start trying to see the world with a higher sense of reverence.

Learn an Instrument
Learning a new instrument is on plenty of people’s to-do lists, but it often gets neglected. Seize this opportunity and commit yourself to it! Playing music allows you to express yourself creatively, and the amount of practice and dedication it takes will reward you with a new sense of accomplishment.

Get Some Exercise
Physical health and emotional health have a strong correlation, so get active! If you already work out regularly, set a new goal and really push yourself. If going to the gym is something that’s always seemed like a good idea if you could only find the time, then there’s no better time than now.

Reconnect with Friends and Family
Good friends and family will always be there for you, so take the time to reconnect. Call up some friends you haven’t seen in a while or visit home if it’s been too long since you’ve seen your family. You’ll learn to appreciate the people who have been with you the whole time, even if you didn’t notice as much before.

Find a New Show
Okay, we can’t be active and productive all the time. If you decide it’s time to get caught up in a new Netflix binge-watching marathon, try to pick a show that has some depth or artistic integrity to it. You want an experience that will enrich your life to some extent, not one that will just feel like a total waste of time.

Apply Yourself Elsewhere
A breakup will get you down in the dumps, there’s no doubt about it. You may feel completely drained and like you don’t have the energy to put forth any effort. But whether you’re in school, working, or job hunting, working harder at what you do will leave you feeling more productive and will actually give you even more energy. It’s all about having the right attitude.

Keep a Journal
All of these ideas are great ways to keep your mind off of what’s going on, but there will be times when you have to face what happened. Rather than wallowing aimlessly, start keeping a journal and write out what it is you’re feeling. You’re allowed to (and should) be angry and upset, but get those feelings out rather than letting them stir and bring you down slowly.
