The alleged withdrawal of former Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Finance, Obong Bassey Albert (OBA), from the 2015 Governor race finally became real this morning after a meeting that lasted although the night in Abuja at the residence of Mr. Jide Omokare.
Obong Albert, in the midst of his birthday celebration, was invited to Abuja at the instance of Governor Godswill Akpabio, was clearly told the party’s position regarding the 2015 Governorship of Akwa Ibom State, which according to the party is zone to Eket Senatorial District.
It is reported that the former Finance boss got enticed by the offer of getting an automatic ticket to replace the representative of Uyo Senatorial Districts at the National Assembly, Senator Ita Enang, in 2015.
An Abuja source, who does not want his name in print, says “Obong Albert finally bows to pressure from Governor Akpabio. I knew the young man was not serious from day one and again, the zoning arrangement in the state is not in his favour. But then, having run the course till now just to chicken out on the basis of getting an automatic Senate ticket is unthinkable. What will he tell his supporters? How is he even sure he will get the Senate ticket? The annoying aspect is the fact that he has agreed to collapse all his political structures for the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr. Udom Emmanuel. They are just furnishing him with bait.”
The source further said the sum of N2billion was promised him as a refund to all incurred expenses in the race so far, according to the source; the President’s name was dropped just to make the meeting authentic before Obong Albert.
An ardent support of the OBA 2015 project says “it would have been better for him not to have attempted the Governorship than to start and stop just when the ‘music’ was on. If he tries, his political history will be liken to the proverbial unfortunate child that, while growing its first tooth, grew a decayed one.”
Political observers believed this to be just another trick of the Governor to clear the coast for his ‘anointed,’ Mr. Udom Emmanuel, even when the party has specifically warned against such attempt.
